Sumit Bothra Managing Director, Embargo management

Sumit Bothra entered the music industry in 1996 while at The University of Pennsylvania as a College Rep for Virgin Records. While there he also earned 2 degrees from the Wharton School of Business and the University of Pennsylvania School of Engineering on the side.  In 1998 Bothra to set-up the first College Marketing Department within a European major at Sony Music. While there he also created a joint-venture with Sony Music India, selling 500,000 records in its first two years.  Bothra set up Embargo Management in 2003, which currently handles the careers of The Boxer Rebellion, Fink, and The Staves – a horizon that sees him operate in the wholly-independent, independent, and major label sectors.  In 2009 Bothra led The Boxer Rebellion to become the first unsigned band in history to enter the Billboard 200 Albums Chart on a digital release.  He also constructed the first strategic partnership between a band and music retailer HMV, designed to enable The Boxer Rebellion to release their albums in the UK on their own terms. Bothra has spoken at numerous industry conferences including In the City, The Great Escape, Un-Convention, The Live UK Summit, and City Showcase. Bothra’s business partner is Radiohead co-manager, Brian Message.
